Dream 2️⃣: Haft-Sin

Lara Sarkissian

Haft-Sin in Sound:

My memories of Nowruz in an Iranian-Armenian household were of my mother growing sabzeh, sprouts, then throwing it into Ocean Beach in San Francisco once the new year came around. We would hear Nima TV’s Nowruz program fill my childhood home with Leila, Vigen, Haydeh and Andy, as the television soundscape blended with my Nana’s frying of kotlets and preparation of kuku sabzi.

In this piece, I work within the limitations of ‘7’, as producing can often feel infinite with technology. I use ‘Sin’ as a way to play with focus and abstract the limited foundational elements and sound sources. I make use of the following instruments, environments, samples and field recordings to invite listeners into an imagined site:

1. Synth
2. Santur
3. Saz
4. Strings
5. Stream
6. Silversmithing
7. Sea
